This is an important consideration and Sir Paul

Chater has agreed to endeavour to obtain the

acquiescence of the lot-owners to the area show being set aside for this purpose.

(c). Good roads are reserved throughout on which any

buildings erected on the lots may front.

It is proposed that the filling required to

form the reclamation should be obtained by cutting down Morrison

Hill to about the level of the surrounding land. I am addressing

you on this subject in a separate Despatch but since Sir Henry May's departure it has been found that the amount of filling

which can be ontained from Morrison Hill is about 3 million

cubic yards, while the amount required for the reclamation shown on plan 'C' is only about 1 million cubic yards.

The disposal of the balance to public advant- -age in any other part of the Colony than Wanchai Bay would be a very expensive business, and after further discussion with the Colonial Secretary, the Director of Public Works and Sir Paul Chater I strongly recommend that the reclamation should be extend- -ed as shown in Plan 'D'. The chief alterations are the following:- (a). Instead of stopping for the present at Heard Street,

the reclamation will be continued up to the Bowrington Canal, which will be filled in and utilized partly as building sites and partly as an

additional open space.

(b). The lots facing the sea will be extended to a width

of 300 feet. Sir Paul Chater states that this is very desirable in order that they may be used for the erection of Godowns and Warehouses, for which purpose the width of about 120 feet shown on plan

'C' is too small.
